Concussion Tools

The following concussion tools were created by the Concussion in Sport Group (CISG). The CISG continues to commit to updating assessment and concussion recognition tools that are freely available.

The concussion tools have been developed based on a comprehensive systematic review and consensus processes, and were approved as part of the 2022 Amsterdam Consensus Conference.

Concussion Recognition Tool 6 (CRT6)

The CRT6 serves as a tool for non-medically trained individuals to recognize suspected Sport Related Concussion and to take appropriate next steps when a concussion is suspected. The CRT6 is not to be used in the diagnosis of concussion; it is a tool to help recognize injury and remove the athlete from activity. Early recognition and removal of the acutely injured athlete is crucial and can improve the health and well-being of athletes.

Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 6 (SCAT6)

The SCAT6 is a standardized tool for evaluating concussions designed for use by healthcare professionals. The SCAT6 cannot be performed correctly in less than 10-15 minutes. Except for the symptoms scale, the SCAT6 is intended to be used in the acute phase, ideally within 72 hours (3 days), and up to 7 days, following injury. If greater than 7 days post-injury, consider using the SCOAT6/Child SCOAT6. The diagnosis of concussion remains a clinical endeavour, of which information from the SCAT6 is only one part of the overall diagnostic process.

Child Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 6 (Child SCAT6)

The Child SCAT6 is a standardized tool for evaluating concussions in children ages 8-12 years, and designed for use by healthcare professionals. The Child SCAT6 cannot be performed correctly in less than 10-15 minutes. The Child SCAT6 is intended to be used in the acute phase, ideally within 72 hours (3 days), and up to 7 days, following injury. If greater than 7 days post-injury consider using the Child Sport Concussion Office Assessment Tool 6 (Child SCOAT6).

Sport Concussion Office Assessment Tool 6 (SCOAT6)

The SCOAT6 is a tool for evaluating concussion in a controlled office environment by healthcare professionals typically from 72 hours (3 days) following a sport-related concussion. The diagnosis of concussion is a clinical determination made by a healthcare professional. The various components of the SCOAT6 may assist with the clinical assessment and help guide individualized management. The SCOAT6 is used for evaluating athletes aged 13 years and older. For children aged 12 years or younger, please use the Child SCOAT6.
